Old Hamilton masks collected by Otto Geist, 1934
Fifty years after Sheldon Jackson brought masks from the lower Yukon to his museum in Sitka, Otto Geist collected sixteen masks from the Yukon community of Old Hamilton and sold them to the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks. Geist also obtained the masks' stories, recorded in English by the local schoolteacher, Pauline Kameroff, from an old man who had seen the masks presented. Museums have many masks, but in few cases do we know the stories behind them.
